IT WAS a case of better late than never for Jeff Roberts as his Corsham Town side blasted four goals past Pewsey Vale in the Wiltshire Senior Cup – after 90 goalless minutes.

Corsham progressed to the quarter-finals on Saturday, December 12 – where they will travel to reigning county champions Highworth Town – by blowing away Adi Holcombe’s Pewsey in extra-time - but only after failing to break down their visitors inside the regulation distance.

Roberts’ men discovered an almighty second wind and ran away with proceedings in the extra half-hour, substitute Kalum Youngsam firing in a brace before Keiron Gleed and Dan Lardner pressed the issue home.

“We were fitter than them and we showed that and I think if we’d scored during the 90 minutes, their heads would have gone down,” said the Corsham manager.

“We had a few chances and their keeper’s made a couple of good saves but they had one or two chances too – we just couldn’t get one to go in.

“The pitch was soft and we knew it was going to cut up, so we couldn’t really play our football. I think that suited them more.

“We decided to take off our two wingers for two other wingers late on and once we did get a goal five minutes into extra-time, we ran away with it.”

Roberts, whose team take on Warminster Town in the Toolstation League First Division on Wednesday night, knows that Corsham will be in for a major test when they meet Highworth in the next round of the competition.

He said: “Highworth are a good side and they’re doing well in the Hellenic Premier at the minute.

“They had a good run in the FA Vase last year and that’s going to be a tough game but we’ll go there and do our best to get something out of it.”
