STEVE Robertson grabbed an injury-time winner as Royal Wootton Bassett Town toppled league-leaders Thatcham Town 2-1.

Bassett took the lead early on when George Drewitt picked out Harvey Scholes inside the visitors' half and he skipped through a number of challenges before curling the ball into the top corner.

Both sides were then reduced to 10 men when a Scholes tackle caused a melee which involved all 22 players and both benches.

Once things had calmed down, Bassett’s Matthew Cheetham was dismissed for use of his head, while Thatcham’s Danny Lachacz saw red for violent conduct.

Thatcham, who began the day on top of the Premier Division table, grabbed a last-minute equaliser through Josh Helmore.

But Bassett were not to be denied as Robertson picked the ball up from a throw-in. He then skipped past his marker before seeing his shot deflected home with 93 minutes on the clock.

“I don’t think the sending-offs had any bearing on the game as both teams were down to 10 men,” Braithwaite said.

“Their guy looked to throw a punch and Matt has moved his head forward in his direction - the letter of the law says that they have to go.

“But it was really pleasing to get the win. We would have been happy to take a point when they equalised, but we kept going and got all three.”

The win at Thatcham saw Braithwaite’s men move up to 12th in the table following Lydney Town’s home lose to Ascot United.

“The last four games, we have been missing key players,” Braithwaite said. “Our keeper, Curtis Meare, is out after dislocating his shoulder.

“Robbo missed a few games - he is someone that will naturally score goals and when he is out it does make a difference.

“But before Saturday, we had had three cup games and that gave us the opportunity to get some players back.”
