DARRAN Walters admitted Devizes Town were beaten by a better side as they saw their winless run extend to a tenth game away at Chard Town.

The pitch at Chard’s Dening Sports Field home is on a severe slope, and Walters reckons that did his inexperienced squad no favours as they were caught out by the conditions.

Chard took a 1-0 lead into the break and raced further clear with two more unanswered goals in the second half, with Devizes’ cause not helped by a red card for goalkeeper Matt Tilley late on.

“It was a fair result - I can’t have any complaints about it,” said Walters.

“It is always quite a unique game down there because the pitch is on such a slope. I always hated playing down there and I think for a few of the boys, it was the first time they had seen the pitch, so it was a bit of an eye-opener.

“We were 1-0 down at half-time, having played down the slope, so we were always going to be up against it.

“I knew it was going to be a difficult game. We’d have had to play very well to get something down there.

“I think they are third and we are third-from-bottom, so that’s quite a big gap to try to make up.”

Walters admitted confidence is suffering at Nursteed Road as Devizes struggle to find their best form.

However, he hopes there can be light at the end of the tunnel soon and is aiming for a win when they travel to second-from-bottom Wincanton Town on Saturday.

Walters said: “We just have to move on and try to get some points on the board.”
