WROUGHTON stunned high-flying Melksham Town Reserves when they ran out 3-1 winners on Saturday.

Mark Love’s side had won just three of their opening seven games heading into the fixture, while only goal difference was keeping Melksham off the top of the table.

However, Wroughton showed no regard for the form book and turned in a superb display at the Weir Field to upset the odds.

Jamie Hicks and Ryan Keech gave the hosts a two-goal cushion, only for Melksham to grab a lifeline with a goal just before the break.

However, Wroughton refused to surrender and Alex Hammond struck to make the points safe for his side after the interval.

Assistant manager Paul Bowden said: “It was a really good result and one we totally deserved. Even their manager came up to us afterwards and said we’d dominated them all over the pitch.

“We’ve had an inconsistent team for a lot of the season and that’s reflected in our results. Sometimes we don’t know who we will have until the Thursday night before the game.

“It was the same again this weekend and one of our forward line, Steve Nisbitt, actually ended up having to go in goal.

“We changed the formation as we knew they were dangerous but they didn’t really trouble him too much. We contained them really well.

“When they scored just before half-time we thought it was going to be like the Alamo in the second half but the lads were unbelievable. They battled really well and kicked on make sure we got the win.”

Shrewton United climbed to the top of the table when they ran in a magnificent seven to beat Sarum Youth at home, with the visitors replying twice.

United capitalised on Melksham’s defeat as well as a 3-3 draw for previous leaders Malmesbury Victoria, who were held at home by Marlborough Town.

Trowbridge Town are on cloud nine after moving into the top three as a result of their emphatic 9-0 win over Vale of Pewsey.

At the other end of the table, bottom side Andover New Saints went agonisingly close to picking up just a second point of the campaign but succumbed to a 1-0 loss when they entertained Devizes Town Reserves.

Saints remain below Wilts Calne Town on goal difference after they came off second best in a 4-3 thriller away at Ludgershall Sports.

Trowbridge Wanderers triumphed by the odd goal in three when they travelled to Chippenham Park Development, while the only draw over the weekend was in Corsham Town Reserves’ match at home to their Royal Wootton Bassett Town counterparts, which ended 1-1.
