AFTER conceding 24 goals and failing to score any in their opening three matches of the season, Marc Lanfear’s Westbury United Reserves side put in a much better performance at Semington Magpies.

But they were denied a share of the spoils as a late goal earned Magpies a 4-3 victory which saw them claim their first Trowbridge Windows-sponsored Trowbridge League Division One league win of the season.

Westbury fell behind to a goal from the youthful Neil Grant who scored his first goal for Magpies on his debut, but they drew level courtesy of Sean Meer and thanks to a second from Meer they went 2-1 up. Things were all square prior to half time, Craig Neate scoring for the Magpies to make it two-apiece.

Sean Meer had a glorious chance to restore Westbury’s lead, but on a hat trick he missed from the penalty spot.

Magpies made the most of the miss with Paul Gittins scoring to put them 3-2 up. Back came Westbury and when player-manager Lanfear came off the bench to draw his team level it was game on.

With minutes left Cameron Evans another debutant for Magpies netted his first goal for the side to seal a hard fought win for the villagers.

Following their surprise 3-2 loss at Hilperton United last weekend Potterne FC returned to winning ways with a 5-2 home success over Heytesbury.

Potterne made the perfect when Neil Clark put them in front on three minutes. Heytesbury keeper Sam Spratt pulled off a couple of good stops before Tom Lye headed home on nine minutes to double his team's lead.

A second from Clark midway through the half made it 3-0 and shortly after Wayne House added number four.

It was 5-0 just after the half hour mark, Tom Lye heading home after responding quickest to a shot that cannoned off the bar.

Heytesbury fared a lot better in the second half and they reduced the arrears when Craig Sheppard converted a Leigh Kennedy cross.

Kennedy himself added a second from a James Reeves cross, but they were in vain and had it not been for a couple of late saves from keeper Spratt’s Potterne’s victory would have been more impressive.

White Horse FC found themselves a goal down at the interval at home to Castle Combe before a strong second half display led to Allan Clarke’s side turning things around to claim a 2-1 success.

Carl Dawson’s goal for Combe separated the teams at the break and the longer the match went on it looked as if Combe would hold out for victory.

But with 20 minutes remaining the ball fell to Stuart Barber who drilled home from 18 yards to restore parity for Clarke’s side and with 10 minutes left Pete Ayton headed in a Jack Holdway cross to seal victory for the White Horse men.
