DAVE Ferris reckons it is a testament to how far his Chippenham Park side have come that he left Portishead Town with a twinge of disappointment at having to settle for a goalless draw.

There was little to chose between the two sides in west Somerset, with Robbie Burton’s second-half header which cannoned off the post for Park the closest either came to finding a goal.

The point keeps Park in the top five in the table, although it continues their fluctuating form as they have now won five, drawn three and lost four of their 12 league fixtures.

Although he felt his side could have sneaked back to Wiltshire with a win, Ferris was keen to focus on the bigger picture.

“I felt like we had the better chances but if I was the Portishead manager and had come off having lost the game I would have been disappointed. Both teams cancelled each other out,” said Ferris.

“We beat them 3-1 at home on the opening day of the season but they were a good side and it was always going to be a different story away from home. They are motivated and work hard.

“Going in at half-time at 0-0 was probably about fair. We had some early openings but didn’t take them and then they had a couple of chances themselves.

“In the second half we dominated possession and territory but found it difficult to break them down.

“Overall I am very pleased with a point away from home.

“We are a little bit disappointed with the way we have started but it’s still the best start we have made in our three seasons in this league.

“I need to take that disappointment with a touch of realism, we have come a long way. We are not happy just doing what we are doing and we have got more to offer.”

Park are back at home on Saturday and entertain an Oldland Abbotonians side who suffered their first league defeat of the campaign at the weekend.

Ferris said: “They have done well to stay unbeaten for so long and it’s a testament to how they have come on. It’s another tough test for us but one we will be looking to take three points from.”
