CALNE Town boss Neurin Jones was pleased to get the monkey of his back as his side claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 success over Bishop Sutton.

Having beaten Roman Glass St George in the FA Vase last Wednesday in extra time, Calne were able to build on that to claim their first league win and lift them away from the bottom of the table.

Having survived an early scare when Steve Allison saved from the penalty spot after Alex Hamilton was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area, Town took the lead in the second half from 12 yards.

Glenn Armstrong was pushed from behind and he picked himself up to covert the spot kick.

The visitors looked to have done enough to secure a point when they equalised with 10 minutes remaining, but a 93rd minute strike from Nathan Phillimore gave the hosts the much-needed win.

It may not have been the most convincing of wins but Jones was happy to see his side end the run of five games without a victory.

“It wasn’t a very pretty game to be fair,” said Jones.

“We really wanted to get that win and we thought it wasn’t going to happen, but we scraped in.

“We’ve been unlucky in recent games. We have played really well but not got the results.

“Nobody has been down it is just a case that we have played some good teams and we just wanted to get past that drawing stage and get that win.”

Calne welcome back Kris Beasley on Wednesday night for their game against Oldland Abbotonians, while Aaron Hopkins is still absent on holiday.

“We just have to build on that win now,” added Jones.

“We hope that win will put us in good stead and will be looking for another win on Wednesday night.”
