DEVIZES Town manager Darran Walters was delighted to see his new-look side get over their early-season teething problems and clinch their first victory of the campaign last weekend.

Walters’ revamped Devizes side, who are made up primarily of inexperienced youngsters, had slipped to defeat in all of their four outings before their visit to county rivals Westbury United on Saturday but three second half goals saw them return to Nursteed Road with their first three-point haul of the season.

Westbury took the lead early on after Devizes’ Jon O’Donovan brought down Nathan Hallett in the area, allowing Gary Tugwell to fire home from the penalty spot.

But Walters’ men turned the game on its head not long after half-time thanks to two goals from Robbie Mitchell, with the ball bouncing into the net off the Devizes man from a Tom Slater corner before he slotted home through the legs of keeper Charlie Heydon Slater then teed up substitute Glynn Rowles to make it 3-1 to the visitors before Brett Partner’s scorching effort reduced the deficit late on.

Boss Walters said: “We’ve got a bit of a break before our next game (against Hengrove Athletic on Tuesday, September 1), so it was important for us to try and get a win before that.

“It was a game that we wanted to win because Westbury have had a bad start to the season too, and we managed to get it.

“We’ve got a completely new team this year and they’re very inexperienced but we’ll have a good team in a few years.”
