MELKSHAM began the defence of their Toolstation League Premier Division title in the perfect manner as they completed two wins in the space of three days.

The Conigre-based outfit opened their campaign with a 2-0 win at home to Clevedon Town, before following that up with a 4-2 triumph against Longwell Green Sports on Monday.

Despite some early-season rustiness, Melksham boss Darren Perrin was pleased with the start his side have made.

Melksham went in level at half-time with Longwell courtesy of a 28th minute strike from Dan Kovacs.

However, the hosts turned the screw in the second half as Kovacs netted his second, before Ryan Bennett and substitute Jack Morris wrapped up the win.

“In the first half, there was nothing between the sides,” said Perrin.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half, but then you have got to give credit to Longwell Green.

“In the second half, we picked the tempo of the game up a lot better.

“Six points in the first two games is very pleasing.”

Kovacs has now netted three times in the opening two fixtures, having also opened the scoring on Saturday against Clevedon.

His goal was followed up by strike partner Gary Higdon in the 88th minute and Perrin is hoping for a fruitful season from the duo.

“Kovacs is a very good player, but there is a lot more to come from him and Higdon,” added Perrin.

“Both of them, by their own admissions, are still a little bit rusty and when those two are firing and on top of their game, we are a far better side for it.

“I wouldn’t have thought there are many sides at full throttle just yet.

“All you are looking to do is to try and pick up as many points as you can and hope the fitness and fluency comes with it as you go along.

“At the end of the day, we got the win and a clean sheet.”
