A DEBUT strike from Zac Messenger was not enough for Pewsey Vale to avoid defeat on the opening day of the season as they went down by the odd goal in three at Alton Town.

In tough, hot conditions, a new-look Vale side containing two debutants, with two more on the bench, were unfortunate not to come away with at least a share of the spoils.

Lewis Taylor’s men found themselves a goal down after a quarter-of-an-hour but hit back and levelled the scores on the break when Messenger found the net after good interplay between Jack Hopper and Michael Martin.

Vale started to gain a proper foothold in the game in the second half but were undone by from a corner seven minutes from time as the home side snatched the victory.

Pewsey are on the road again on Saturday when they travel to Fleet Spurs.
