Throughout life, you discover that silence can take many forms.

You have the reassuring silence from a friend, or uncomfortable silences with a work colleague, or the 'I don’t agree with you but I won’t say anything silence'.

And then you have the stunned silence from Swindon Town fans that would have filled the majority of cars, buses and trains on their way home from Wembley on Sunday evening.

Everyone would have had 1,000 thoughts racing in their head but it would have been too painful to talk about it.

It was something that you needed to grapple with so that you made sense and when the silence broke, the full post-mortem could begin.

Last Sunday was one of the worst days I’ve ever experienced as a Swindon Town fan. It was humiliating.

After months of hard work to get ourselves into a position to earn promotion, we not only failed to compete - we failed to show up.

The team that left the pitch after beating Sheffield United 7-6 on aggregate wasn’t seen again this season.

The side 20,100 Town supporters watched at the home of football were a pale imitation of the real thing.

Town’s wait for second tier football will enter a 16th season and despite everything we all went through on Sunday, I can’t wait for the new season to get started.

But before next season gets under way, Town have a huge rebuilding job.

All our superb loan players will return to their parent clubs and at full-time on Sunday, Wes Foderingham all but confirmed that he would be leaving Town this summer on a free transfer.

Another former Paolo Di Canio signing, Andy Williams, is also out of contract and likely to move on.

And despite being under contract, other players will also be packing their bags as well.

Massimo Luongo is certain to leave, while Ben Gladwin has also been attracting attention.

Moves for Nathan Byrne, Jon Obika or Yaser Kasim could be possible and time will tell who Mark Cooper has left to build a side with.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who has read my column over the season - it’s richly appreciated.

See you all in August.
