THE month of March holds the key to Malmesbury Victoria’s Wiltshire League title ambitions according to manager Wayne Kibble.

The Vics have put together a nine-match unbeaten run in the Premier Division, with Kibble’s men having not tasted defeat in the league since October last year, and they currently sit ten points behind league leaders Ludgershall Sports but with five matches in hand.

On Saturday, Kibble’s side marched on with a 4-2 victory at ten-man Wilts Calne Town, with Krystian Hext bundling over the line after Alan Griffin’s free-kick hit the bar before Alan Webb and Will Picter added to the scoreline.

Griffin netted the visitors’ fourth but his goal sandwiched two Calne efforts.

“Before Christmas, our aim was to stay unbeaten right through to the end of the year and now we’ve not lost since October,” said Kibble.

“We definitely want to try and go for the league. I think the most important thing is getting through March unscathed.

“I’m not worried about there being a few draws here or there – if we can get through it unscathed, that should set us up for April, when we end up playing two or three times a week.

“We didn’t play particularly well on Saturday and it was a bit of a stop-start game because of the referee. They had a man sent off for a second bookable offence not long in, which didn’t help them.

“But we’re happy with the win. There are still other sides in a similar position to us, like Trowbridge (Wanderers) and Southbrook, so we’ve got to keep going.”

Elsewhere, second-placed Melksham Town Reserves kept the heat on Ludgershall with a 3-0 win against Wootton Bassett Town Development.

Trowbridge Wanderers beat Vale of Pewsey 2-0 whilst Supermarine Sports won 3-1 at Sarum Youth.

Southbrook hammered Westbury United Reserves 4-1 whilst Trowbridge Town celebrated a 2-0 win at Marlborough Town, but there was no joy for Corsham Town Reserves who lost 3-0 at Shrewton United.

FC Chippenham Youth booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Senior KO Cup by beating Devizes Town Reserves 3-0 at Stanley Park.
