DARRAN Walters believes Devizes Town are paying the price for a spate of injuries, highlighted by Saturday’s 3-0 loss at home to Oldland Abbotonians.

Devizes were missing several key players for the match at Nursteed Road and joint-manager Walters reckons as many as half a dozen regulars were absent.

And that led to a below-par Town performance, with Oldland in complete control of the contest pretty much throughout.

Jordan Richards fired the visitors ahead in the first half before strikes from Paul Coles and Lewis Powell put the game to bed after the break.

Walters said: “It was a tough day and we’ve got no complaints about the result.

“At the moment we are struggling with injuries and people being unavailable. We were down to the bare bones.

“We are having to chop and change the team pretty regularly and that doesn’t help.

“We conceded midway through the first half and were 1-0 down at half-time.

“Then they scored a second goal about 10 minutes in and that killed us off and ended it as a contest.

“They always looked more dangerous than us and we have been struggling to score goals of late.

“There weren’t many bright points. Matt Tilley was outstanding. He was our man of the match but the fact he plays in goal says a lot about the game.”

Devizes will now benefit from a two-week break as they are without a fixture this weekend.

Town are next in action when they entertain Wells City on Saturday week and Walters hopes the rest will do them good.

“We just need to stick together through this period and try to get through it,” added Walters.

“The break has come at a good time for us. I would think we’ll just give the lads next weekend off and then hopefully when we come back in we’ll start to get some people back fit.

“The match against Wells is a game we have to look at to get three points from to start to put ourselves right.”
