NICK Maggs conceded Pewsey Vale were well below their best after they were thrashed by third-placed Amesbury Town.

Nick Turpin headed Amesbury in front in the first half, while Danny Finnigan, Turpin, Craig Lewis and Tyler Brockway were all on target in the second.

Micky Martin got a consolation for Pewsey but the hosts were already 3-0 in arrears by that stage.

“It was a bad day at the office. We didn’t play that badly, they were just much more clinical,” said Maggs.

“In the first half we were 1-0 down and had been very poor, so the lads got a good talking to.

“I thought we were much better in the second half but it was a strange one as we conceded four times as many goals.

“At times we looked like we were getting back into the game but then they would go up the other end and score again.”

Pewsey face a stiff challenge of securing an immediate return to winning ways as they now travel to league leaders Tadley Calleva on Saturday.

“We have got another tough one coming up, so that will be a good measure of seeing how we can bounce back,” added Maggs.

“Tadley Calleva and Amesbury have scored nearly 100 goals between them in the league already so it’s not going to be easy.

“We just need to perform like we did in the second half against Amesbury for the full 90 minutes.”
