WOOTTON Bassett came from behind to beat bottom of the league Cheltenham Saracens 3-2 last night.

A late penalty from Nathan Gambling was enough to secure a league double over the hosts.

The Hellenic Premier Division side responded to Saturday’s defeat away to Milton United to lift themselves to 13th place in the league table.

Bassett strolled to a 5-1 victory over Saracens back in September, but a much improved home side gave their visitors a lot more trouble last night.

Paul Braithwaite’s men found themselves two goals down to the hosts in the first half an hour but a goal from Dan Bailey sent Bassett in at half-time only a goal behind.

The away side pulled the game back level mid-way through the second half through Callum Wright before, in the dying minutes of the game, a penalty was awarded for a hand ball in the box.

Gambling stepped up and made no mistakes to give his side a lucky escape and all three points.

New College were dumped out of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup at the first round stage as they were beaten 5-1 at home by Reading Town, Max Slinn netting for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Highworth Town is pleased to announce a sports evening with the ex-Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough, Fulham and Oldham Athletic goalkeeper Mark Crossley, who is currently on the Barnsley coaching staff.

The event is due to take place on Saturday, February 7, with a 7.30 for 8.00 pm start.

The cost of a ticket is £20 which includes a supper and a comedian support act.
