MALMESBURY Victoria manager Wayne Kibble is hoping that his Wiltshire League side can cause one of the biggest upsets in the FA Vase this weekend.

The Flying Monk Ground side are a surprise inclusion in this season’s competition after dropping out of the Hellenic League last year.

But the Vics, who were on the brink of extinction in the previous campaign, are now looking to upset the odds when they host Hellenic Premier Division outfit Bracknell Town.

“We have upset people in the past and I know that it is a big ask this weekend, but on our day we are capable of springing a surprise on them,” Kibble told the Advertiser.

“I’ve seen their results, they have had some good ones, but they’ve also had some not so good ones.”

When Malmesbury, who currently sit in fourth place in the Wiltshire League, withdrew from the Hellenic League at the end of last season, the club had already applied for this year’s FA Cup and FA Vase.

And despite informing the FA that they were no longer playing at a level eligible for either the Vase or the FA Cup, the governing body gave them dispensation to continue in the Vase but not the cup.

“It did come as a bit of a shock that we would be playing in the Vase this year,” the Vics boss added. “Especially after dropping in to the Wilts Prem.

“But it is a boost for everyone at the Vics and the boys have had this date in their diary for a few weeks now.

“I’m sure that if they go out and give everything on Saturday then I’ll be a happy man.”

Highworth Town will also be looking to win their round two qualifying tie when they host Combined Counties League Premier Division side Hartley Wintney, while Wootton Bassett Town entertain Abingdon United.

In the Hellenic Premier Division, Sam Collier’s Shrivenham welcome Ascot United to Barrington Park.
