IT was a game to remember on Saturday for Calne Town striker Glenn Armstrong as he marked his 500th appearance for the club.

Despite losing 3-1 away to Chard, nothing could dampen the moment for the forward who made his first appearance for the Lillywhites in the FA Cup away to Western Supermarine in 2002, aged 19.

Calne Town were able to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat with a 2-1 away win at bottom of the league Portishead on Tuesday night.

Despite a hat full of chances in the first half for the visitors the game was goalless as they entered the break.

The pressure told though in the second half when Matt Smart delivered in a free-kick from the left and Marcus Lovesey was on hand to tap home at the back post.

However the lead was short lived when the hosts scored a cracking volley into the roof of the net.

Calne, who travelled with just 13 players, secured all three points with just seven minutes left on the clock when Matt Smart fired in a free-kick from 20 yards out.

“We played some really good football in the first half and created a lot of chances but we could not find the finish,” said manager Simon Gardner.

“Like it has been for us recently it was a game of two halves and we didn’t play as well in the second half but we took our chances.

“We have just signed Liam Brown, who is a centre forward and can also play in midfield so I am hoping he will be able to help.

“We just need to get some consistency and I think we are capable of finishing in the top half of the table.”
