INDIVIDUAL mistakes were to blame again for Chippenham Park as they lost 2-1 at home to Oldland Abbotonians on Tuesday night.

The defeat now leaves manager Dave Ferris without a win in four after a bright start to the season saw them pick up nine points from a possible 12.

On a night where both teams were evenly matched it was defensive errors again that cost the home side.

The visitors had a chance to open the scoring in the first half when their centre forward hit the bar from three yards out, which looked harder to miss.

The woodwork then prevented Chippenham at the other end as Josh Ferguson’s effort was tipped onto the cross bar to see both sides go into half-time level.

Chippenham started the second half brightly and when a cross come shot came in from just inside Oldland’s half, Mark Robinson was able to stick a foot out to flick the ball over the goalkeepers head.

Five minutes later Dan Smith was through and side footed the ball beyond the keeper, but again the woodwork denied the hosts.

The visitors responded well and when Lewis Porter was beaten at his near post the scores were back level.

Porter was again at fault when he came off his line to meet the ball but was beaten to it by Oldland’s striker and Chippenham found themselves behind.

Chippenham failed to find a way back into the tie and Ferris was left disappointed at the end of a game he thought they deserved something from.

“It was a strange night and I thought both sides played well,” he said.

“I believe the half-time score was a fair reflection on the half and we started off the second half very well.

“Then we were hit by what have become our usual problems this season, defensive errors.

“The disappointing part was that we could have been 2-0 up and we then found ourselves behind.

“Fair play to Oldland, they came and wanted to play football but I was disappointed in the way that individual defensive errors let us down again.

“We started the season well but have not had a win for a while and it is difficult to explain because you don’t become a poor defensive side overnight.

“It is all about consistency and we need to find that and start performing as a team.”
