CALNE Town chief Simon Gardner was happy to admit his side may not have necessarily deserved a point from their trip to Hengrove Athletic last weekend.

The Lilywhites trailed from the midway through the first period but with minutes to go, Gardner’s men threw everything at their Bristol opponents and the pressure told as a Hengrove defender diverted the ball into his own net to level up the scores.

The Bremhill View boss expects he went home the happier of the two managers and was pleased to see his team nick a result.

“Hengrove are a side who had been picking up mixed results, just like us, and they were just as bad as we were on Saturday,” said Gardner.

“We had Tom Slater, Tom Boakes, Jake Jeffries and Simon Dance all missing and we huffed and puffed, and just didn’t perform well.

“They put a lot of high balls into the box and Jamie Bartlett dealt with them well. Then, Ben Trafford put in a great last-ditch challenge to stop them scoring a second goal and we stuck Craig Kent up front from centre-back as we piled put the pressure on.

“I would have taken a point before the game and I think I would have gone home a lot happier than their manager.”
