THE U15s’ final proved the most dramatic of Sunday’s Wiltshire Women’s & Girls’ League cup showpieces at Stanley Park in Chippenham.

Trowbridge Town came out on top after a tremendous battle with rivals Melksham.

The game was 3-3 after normal time and finished 4-4 after extra time, with Lauren Gowen scoring a brace and goals from Ellie Osborne and Claudia Downie completing Trowbridge’s tally.

Melksham’s scorers were Liz Bools twice, with Maddy Brown and Annie-Rose Chalmers also on target, but they were edged out in the shootout, 3-2.

Melksham suffered a triple dose of final heartache as their U13s fell to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Swindon Spitfires, while Lugershall were too strong for Melksham in the ladies’ competition final, winning 3-1 with goals from Emma Dobell, Jade Parsons and Emma Waston. Chloe Timbrell scored for Melksham.

In the U12 Cup Final, Ashton Keynes were 4-2 winners over FC Chippenham with a hat-trick from Poppy Romback and a goal from Rebecca Wilkins.

Millie Bailey and Poppy Davies scored for FC Chippenham.

  • NEARLY 90 girls from school years 2-6 were also at Stanley Park for the league’s football festival on Sunday.

Ggirls from Ashton Keynes, Derry Hill, FC Calne, FC Chippenham, Marlborough, Melksham, Trowbridge, Warminster and some not yet linked to clubs took part in the event, which was designed to increase the interest in girls’ football within the county. Event organiser John Murphy said: “We were amazed to see the interest in this event.

“It brought together existing girls’ teams with girls who are relatively new to the game of football.

“There was a fantastic atmosphere and we hope the event will provide a foundation for a new division at U12 in the league from September.
