MELKSHAM Town had to be content with a seventh-placed finish in the Toolstation League Premier Division as they were defeated 3-2 by Devon's Buckland Athletic in their final match of the season at The Conigre on Saturday.

The Wiltshire Senior Cup winners, bottom after seven matches, could have climbed into the top five with a 3-0 victory and took the lead on eight minutes when Ben Thomson crossed and Dan Kovacs headed home.

Two minutes later, the visitors were level when Mike Booth was unmarked to fire home the equaliser.

Just after the half hour mark, Booth rifled home from long-range to give Buckland the lead, but Melksham squared matters ten minutes after half time as Kovacs capitalised on a defensive error.

Booth though was not finished and, 20 minutes from time, was again unmarked to head home the winner.

In the First Division, Devizes Town were beaten 2-0 by Barnstaple Town, Dave Pearse scoring twice for the home side.

Pewsey Vale's hopes of ending their Sydenham League Division One campaign with a victory were dashed by a 2-1 defeat at home to bottom side Hayling Island.

Manager Lewis Taylor and assistant Craig Wall, who will be replaced by U18 assistant coach Nick Maggs next season were unable to bow out with a victory, despite Warren MacDonald's shot being fumbled over the line to give them the lead on 15 minutes.

Hayling equalised from the penalty spot on 37 minutes through Wayne Emery after a foul by Ryan Banks.

Tom Davies gave the visitors victory on 75 minutes with a curling shot.
