DEVIZES Town joint-manager Justin Webster is frustrated that his side’s Toolstation League First Division campaign has been dealt a blow after the Nursteed Road club were deducted four points for fielding a suspended player.

The Toolstation League have confirmed that Devizes’ Gareth Davies should have sat out his side’s trip to Wincanton Town in October and subsequent games against Keynsham Town, Hengrove Athletic and Cheddar after picking up a four-match ban.

Webster and Darran Walters’ side lost 5-0 at Wincanton and were knocked out of the Les Phillips Cup in a 2-0 defeat by Hengrove but after Davies also featured in the 2-2 draw at Keynsham and 4-3 win at Cheddar, Devizes have been docked four points.

Joint-boss Webster insists he wasn’t made aware of the defender’s suspension, but admitted that Town themselves may have been at fault.

“The club gets a lot of information that comes from the FA and whoever it is from the powers that be that picked up the letter must have made a bit of an oversight,” he said.

“It’s really frustrating because we’d been on a bit of a poor run last month and then we find out that we’ve been deducted points as well.

“That game against Cheddar was where we scored a last-minute winner too.

“I’m not sure why it took so long for us to find out about the deduction – it was a genuine oversight and we’ve been punished because of it.”

Toolstation League secretary Ken Clarke said: “Gareth Davies had a four-match ban for games in October and November and after that, he was banned for another two matches but continued playing.

“Because of that, the club has lost a point from when they drew against Keynsham and three points from the win over Cheddar.

“The county FA would have informed the club of the ban, but they should know when a player is suspended and they could have checked online to see.”

The Wiltshire FA declined to comment on the matter when contacted by the Gazette & Herald on Wednesday.
