Corsham continued their run of exciting matches with a hard fought 3-2 win over Trowbridge Wanderers on Sunday. Wanderers had the better of the first half, with several flowing attacks but another hard-working performance in defence from Bradley Godridge, Ollie Webb, Lewis Somerville and Sam Thomson mostly restricted them to long range shots, and anything in the box was comfortably dealt with by Ollie Emerson in goal.
The Corsham midfield of Darrin Moss, Josh Cain, Simon Burt and Ajay Arithoppah stepped up their game in the second half and, combined with selfless running on and off the ball from the front two of Tom Smith and Ernie Peibst, started to create openings in the Wanderers defence with good passing and movement.
It was no surprise when the pressure resulted in a goal when a great cross from Peibst was met at the far post by Arithoppah who slammed an unstoppable left foot shot into the net. But Corsham dominance could not bring a second goal and ten minutes later Wanderers were back in the game with an equally accomplished finish from Martin Johnson.
Corsham now had the upper hand in midfield and they forced another goal with Moss claiming the last touch as the ball crossed the line. And yet Wanderers came back again - a long hopeful punt upfield took an awkward bounce past Emerson and Otis Young won the race to scramble the ball over the line for Wanderers.
With five minutes to go and extra time looming, Corsham played the ball out from the back and out to Peibst on the right wing. His cross was met on the volley by Smith on the edge of the area and his spectacular shot into the top right corner left the keeper with no chance.
There were still chances at either end as both sides tired and Wanderers clipped the post with seconds left. So it finished 3-2 to Corsham who just about deserved it on their second half performance, but both teams were deservedly applauded from the field after a cracking cup tie.
