REYBRIDGE eventer David Doel put on a world-class display to finish just ahead of Marlborough-based New Zealander Andrew Nicholson to win the Advanced section by just .7 of a mark at the Belton International Horse Trials.

Riding Miss Caruso, Doel was second after the dressage on 32.4, and a clear round show jumping put him in a good position to challenge on the cross country, where he finished with just .8 of a time penalty.

Doel said: “The World Class training at Baydon really set my horses up well for the weekend, I am very grateful for the help I received from the World Class programme last week”

His second horse, Chap, owned by Gillian Jonas, finished 15th, and in the Intermediate section, Doel was third, riding Eisfee.

Chippenham teenager Abbie Newbury won the Petplan Equine Medium Restricted Championship in the Petplan Equine Area Festival Finals on Comet II.

The 16-year-old and 13-year-old gelding topped 27 combinations at the prestigious grassroots championships, held alongside the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships at Hartpury College.

She said: “It feels amazing to do so well, and it’s a very nice surprise.”
