CHIPPENHAM Town could secure their National League South status for next season this weekend after Mark Collier’s men picked up six crucial points over Easter.

The Bluebirds defeated Eastbourne Borough 4-0 at home on Saturday before edging Oxford City 1-0 at Marsh Lane on Easter Monday.

And Collier’s men are now a massive 15 points clear of relegation candidates Poole Town, who only have six games remaining.

With survival the club’s aim this season, Collier is keen for his men to kick on from a bumper Easter weekend and secure as many points possible from their remaining four games to challenge for a mid-table spot, starting at Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday.

He said: “After the win over Eastbourne, I told the lads there are 15 points left to earn so let’s see how many we can get.

“If we can’t win, then we’ll try and draw. We’ve got some tough games coming up.

“We play Hemel, Welling and Truro, they will be tough games. But, right now, we’re in a good place and are enjoying football.

“It did take some time to acclimatise to the division, but we’ve got some experience in the team now and that’s helped our cause.

“It’s another big six points for us and a strong weekend.”

A six-point weekend couldn’t have come at a better time for Collier, who will meet with Bluebirds chairman Neil Blackmore this week to discuss the club going forward.

With one eye already on next season, Collier admits adding experience to his side has helped register 15 points from a possible 18 in their last six games.

He said: “The objective this year was to stay in the division.

“It’s a huge step to take from the Southern Premier Division. The infrastructure and finance of teams is different.

“The squad has good spirit, determination and work ethic. If we can finish in the top 14 we’ve done very well.

“Sometimes when we’ve not played well, choice words have been said and there have been conversations that people don’t want. But that’s part of football.

“You only have to go to some grounds to see the quality of teams we’re up against.

“We enjoyed ourselves in the Southern Premier, but we were in it or too long. We now want to be a competitive National South side.”
