THE PARSONS brothers revelled in a family affair as their free-kicks helped Swindon Supermarine overcome Chippenham Town in the second round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Dave Webb’s Marine booked their progress to the next round of county cup with a 2-1 victory at the Webbswood Stadium, with Josh Parsons and Callum Parsons’ first-half set-pieces proving enough to see off Mark Collier’s Bluebirds.

Six minutes in, Alan Griffin shot wide from a tight angle after beating the offside trap while Zak Westlake also wasn’t far off-target at the other end.

Shortly afterwards, the hosts’ Connor Thompson blasted high over the bar as the Bluebirds defence watched on and the deadlock was broken with 19 minutes on the clock as Marine’s Josh Parsons lofted a free-kick over the wall and managed to beat goalie Darren Chitty.

Webb’s men almost found themselves two goals to the good as their opening goalscorer headed Jack Alexander’s cross high into the box and the visitors could only watch Connor Waldon lash a spectacular overhead kick wide.

The Parsons brothers then combined to draw Chitty in action, with Josh feeding midfielder Callum, who forced the Chippenham stopper to knock away an effort with his legs, and the family theme continued as the latter repeated his sibling’s trick on the half-hour mark.

From further out than his brother’s earlier goal, Callum Parsons took aim with a set-piece of his own and curled in a sublime left-footed effort to make it 2-0.

Five minutes before the break, the Bluebirds passed up a chance to get themselves back into the game as winger Reeko Best blazed over from Alan Griffin’s low cross.

In the opening throes of the second period, Andy Sandell lobbed just over the Marine crossbar while home defender Ash Taylor couldn’t angle a free header from a corner on target.

In the 59th minute, Chippenham substitute Matt Smith found space to drive at the hosts’ back line but his attempted finish was thwarted by keeper Connor Johns and shortly afterwards, Sandell’s well-hit volley arced wide of the Marine goal while at the other end, Waldon’s deflected volley was held by Chitty.

With 12 minutes to go, Collier’s men did manage to halve the deficit as striker David Pratt, who had been introduced from the bench, found the bottom corner with a superb overhead strike.

However, it proved little more than a consolation, with Pratt heading over the bar late in the game, Chitty pulling off a spectacular save to deny George Reid and Lewis Thompson rolling a shot inches wide of the Chippenham upright.

Marine booked their place in the next round and brought their five-match winless run to an end.
