MARK Collier will not be getting carried away by whatever result comes Chippenham Town’s way on Saturday as they look to become the early-season pace-setters.

A 1-0 win at home to Cinderford Town on Tuesday night saw the Bluebirds make it 10 points from four at the start of the new campaign and they now face the only side to better that haul this weekend.

Leamington, who were beaten in the play-off final last term, travel to Hardenhuish Park boasting a 100 per cent record and although toppling them would see Chippenham climb to the head of the table, Collier knows it is much too early to read anything into the result.

“They are a good side. They got to the play-off final last year and I think they maybe ran out of steam a bit,” said Collier.

“They have recruited well this summer and you’d expect them to be pushing to be back up there again this season.

“It will be a difficult game and we will have to be at our best to get something but we go into the game in good form ourselves.

“There is a long way to go before the play-off places are settled and nothing is going to be decided by a game in late August but it would be nice to get another good result.”

Matt Smith’s first-half strike was enough to see off a resilient Cinderford in midweek, with the midfielder notching his third goal of the campaign.

Chippenham found life tough against a side who showed little attacking intent but their night would have been much more comfortable had Dave Pratt not seen a goal harshly ruled out for offside just before the interval.

“They set up with everyone behind the ball and were hard to break down – that’s two teams that have come to Hardenhuish Park and done that now,” said Collier.

“We have got a strike force that a lot of people know are very dangerous, so teams set up to try to stop them playing.

“I said to the guys that they just had to keep plugging away and a chance would come.

“If we are to get into the play-offs at the end of the season, we are going to have to overcome all sorts of different formations and tactics and adversity, so this was another one of those challenges.

“Teams have been able to get at us a little bit so far this season and we haven’t been able to keep a clean sheet, so to be able to do that this time was very nice.

“We missed a couple of chances and we had a goal ruled out before half-time for offside, which I thought was unfair.

“If it’s 2-0 at half-time, that changes the complexion of the game but I like a 1-0 win. If we win all our games 1-0, we won’t be too far away.”

James Guthrie is set to return this weekend having missed the Cinderford game, giving Collier a full squad to choose from.
