CHIPPENHAM maintained their play-off push as they polished off relegation threatened Histon.

Two goals from Andy Sandell and a goal direct from a James Guthrie corner were due reward in a game where the Bluebirds fashioned two dozen chances.

The Bluebirds should have been more than a single goal to the good at the interval.

On 11 minutes Histon keeper Denzel Gerrar rushed out of his area to clear, his headed effort only went as far as Matt Smith whose attempt on the unguarded goal was cleared by a covering defender.

That clearance fell to Alex Ferguson who side-footed wide of the goal that was still minus its keeper.

As the Bluebirds continued to bombard the Stutes goal Smith’s shot was saved whilst Alan Griffin’s rasping drive was deflected for a corner.

On 23 minutes Griffin was left unsighted as Harry Grant’s cross made its way to him and he was unable to get his shot on target from close in.

Ferguson then saw his shot blocked whilst Sandell laid the ball back to Guthrie whose drive crashed into the underside of the bar with Ferguson again skying the rebound over.

Chippenham finally broke the Cambridgeshire side’s resistance on 29 minutes when Griffin rolled the ball from right to left across the area and Sandell raced in to fire a low shot home.

After the break Smith and Ferguson both failed with early efforts whilst Gerrar just managed to claw away Smith’s cross with Sandell lurking.

Just after the hour Sandell’s long throw was only cleared as far as Michael Pook whose dipping shot was just too high.

Griffin headed substitute Conor McCormack’s cross just past the far post on sixty five minutes.

The Bluebirds hit the important second goal on 73 minutes when Pook’s free kick was firmly headed home by Sandell.

Nine minutes from time Gerrar could only help Guthrie’s inswinging corner into the net as it went through his arms to make it fifteen goals for the Bluebirds in their last four league games.
