CHIPPENHAM Town boss Mark Collier was not only pleased with the result but also the performance of his side as they dispatched bottom-of-the-league Bedworth United 2-0.

Goals either side of the break from Ashan Holgate and substitute Matt Smith secured the three points for the Bluebirds.

Chippenham, who had to adapt to Bedworth’s 3G pitch, thought they had taken the lead when Andy Sandell beat Denham Hinds but, with the ball rebounding off the back frame of the goal and into Hinds’ arms, the referee waved play to continue.

Despite feeling aggrieved, Chippenham were able to settle back into their rhythm and scored 10 minutes later when Holgate headed home Matt Jones’ cross.

Smith entered the fray in the second half, replacing the returning Alex Ferguson, and settled the game 10 minutes from time when he slotted home Scott Bevan’s cross.

“I’m not just pleased with the result, the performance was good as well,” said Collier.

“I know Bedworth are at the wrong end of the table but they are an improving team and they have picked up some good results of late and have been very competitive.

“I always thought it could be a difficult game on the back of our shortage of confidence and playing on a 3G.

“As it turned out we were excellent on the playing surface and we picked a team that we thought suited the pitch and we were comfortable winners.”

“A clean sheet and to get the two goals was pleasing and we looked a constant threat going forwards.

The win, their first in six in the league, did not lift the Bluebirds back into the play-off spots but Collier is hoping that it will serve as a much-needed confidence boost.

“Hopefully that has got us back on track,” added Collier “There will be a lot of coming and going into the play-offs and back out of the play-offs.”

“I think Cirencester, when we were top, could have been second and they are now 18th, that is how tight the division is.

“Bedworth, although they are struggling, will win some games and their squad was different to when they last played us in August so they will shock a few teams.”
