IT was 'Fergie Time' at Chippenham Town’s end of season presentation evening last weekend as Alex Ferguson picked up two awards.

The 20-year-old midfielder was voted players’ player of the season by his Bluebirds team-mates and was also handed the young player of the year gong by manager Mark Collier and assistant Tom Jones.

Former Swindon Town U18s captain Ferguson, who joined Chippenham at the start of the season following a brief loan spell in the 2013/2014 season, was the Bluebirds top-scorer with 11 league goals last term but had one of those chalked off after Hereford United’s winding up.

“He came to us from Swindon Town on loan and he didn’t do himself justice off the back of an illness and injury as well but Tom had seen a lot of him and as this season has gone on, he’s got better and better,” said Bluebirds boss Collier.

“Players’ player is the one that everyone wants to win, and rightly so.

“Tom would pick the teams on training nights and everyone would want to be in Fergie’s team.

“Once I did the votes on the long trip back from St Neots (in April), after the first 12 or 14, there was obviously one very clear winner.”

Goalkeeper Kent Kauppinen, 24, was named manager’s player of the year.

Collier said: “We cast our minds back to all of the months of the season, including training and attitude on and off the pitch.

“There was a little bit of a laugh in the dressing room when I used to say that we’ve got the best goalkeeper in the league but I absolutely believe that we have got the best goalkeeper in the league.”

Chippenham also confirmed that they will be holding a testimonial match in pre-season for long-serving midfielder Iain Harvey.
