TRIUMPHANT Chippenham Town boss Mark Collier thought that his side deserved the last-gasp goal that knocked Weymouth off the top of the table last weekend.

Lee Phillips returned to haunt his former club was he headed in an 89th-minute winner - his first goal since the opening game of the season - to hand the Bluebirds all three points at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

“We thoroughly deserved it really,” said Collier.

“We started the game particularly well and we were a little disappointed at half-time to still be at 0-0 because we had had two or three very good chances.

“The keeper has made a good save and then (Luke) Ballinger has missed a chance, (Alex) Ferguson has missed a chance, (James) Guthrie has missed a chance and you think maybe, against the top of the league, you have missed your opportunity.

“However it gave us confidence and we were playing particularly well at the time.

“I think we thoroughly deserved the late goal and by their manager’s own admission, it was a game we deserved to win.

“We played some decent football and we got Ballinger away on the right side and he picked out a great cross to the far post, and Lee Philips has come in and headed home from inside the six-yard box.”

Chippenham’s victory in Dorset was their tenth in the table and boss Collier reckons that his side are moving in the right direction.

The Hardenhuish Park chief said: “We have got good players and we are aware of that.

“The continuity of selection has been an absolute nightmare since almost the first game of the season - we have had so many injuries, and long term injuries to key players.

“This week for instance; Michael Pook missed out, Conor McCormack missed out.

“We know we have got a squad of players capable of being at the right end of the table, however we have not managed to get any consistency to our play due to the inconsistency of our selection.

“We know it takes time to build a team and a squad of players, and I think we are going in the right direction.

“We need to back that win up now. I think that is four wins out of the last five so hopefully we are going in the right direction.

“We’re off to Truro on Tuesday and I think we are leaving Chippenham at 2pm and we won’t be back until 3am but we’re going there in good spirits on the back of a very good performance at Weymouth.”
