THE IRONY wasn’t lost on match-winner Ashan Holgate as the Chippenham Town forward scored twice against Dorchester Town despite considering his performance one of the worst he’s produced for the Bluebirds.

The ex-Swindon Town man marked his fifth appearance for Chippenham by finding the net twice in the first half, his first coming from the penalty spot, to see off the Magpies.

Ironically, Holgate wasn’t all that pleased with his display.

He said: “It’s just how football goes sometimes – I actually thought it was one of the worst games I’ve played but I’ve scored two goals.

“I wasn’t holding up the ball, I was making the wrong decisions and I was getting beaten aerially.

“It’s weird how things happen though because I’ve had games where I think I’ve played well and I haven’t even had a shot.”

Holgate linked up with his former Swindon Supermarine mentors Mark Collier and Tom Jones last month after not playing anywhere for the first half of this season.

He said: “I’d last played for Oxford City but I took a bit of time out because of a few things, like having a little’un (daughter Amoreé).

“I obviously know Mark and Tom personally and from working with them at Swindon Supermarine but I wanted to make sure I was physically and mentally ready to go to training with them.”

When Alex Ferguson was brought down in the area with 17 minutes gone, Holgate stepped up to fire home his first goal in a Chippenham shirt from the penalty spot.

Afterwards, Conor McCormack limped off with an injury but another knock soon led to the Bluebirds’ second of the evening.

With Matt Oldring off the pitch receiving treatment for a head injury, Michael Pook played a free-kick behind the defence for Holgate to slide home past Shane Murphy.

Dorchester did halve the arrears when Nathan Walker's low shot went through a crowd of players but it was not enough to stop Collier’s men racking up three points.
