Legge disappointed by opening day collapse
Cricket: New Devizes skipper Pat Legge says former club captain Richard Wright will be rubbing his hands together at the prospect of facing his old side this Saturday after their opening day loss to Potterne.
Theo Pistorius hit 59 not out as Potterne scored 127 for six from their 40 overs on the way to a shock victory over Devizes, who collapsed to 74 all out in reply.
And Legge believes Wright will be confident his Winsley side can inflict more misery on Devizes in the Wiltshire Division this weekend.
Legge said: "Winsley are top of the league after the first game and Richard Wright will probably welcome us with open arms right now.
"I can handle losing but not if we don't compete.
"It was a disappointing start for us against Potterne through a few batsmen not applying themselves.
"We bowled and fielded very well but we didn't learn from the way Potterne batted.
"We're re-building with a young team for the future and we need them to learn on their feet."
Phil Cocks top scored for Devizes with 30, while Rikki Jackson did the damage for Potterne by taking five for 25 off 9.5 overs.
Legge said: "Our poor batting was probably down to a combination of a lack of patience and practice, because it has been too wet to play outside on grass.
"But a few of the guys need a change of tact, to wait for the bad balls rather than creating bad balls as eight of our 11 batsmen did on
Saturday."
Yet one bright spot for Devizes was the performance of 17-year-old fast-medium bowler Ben McGowen, who took two for 30 in an impressive spell.
"He's been taking wickets for the second team for the past two years and he looks at home in the first team now," said Legge.
"He's bowling really well, he has matured quickly and he looks to have a bright future in the game."
