Silk confident of promotion with new-look team
Cricket: Confident Chippenham captain Steve Silk is ready to combine youth with experience as he aims for an assault on promotion.
The Glos/Wilts outfit are aiming for the title in their second year after relegation from Premier Two in 2006.
Silk's decision to go with youth last season initially saw Chippenham struggle but a run of four wins in their last six games vindicated his choice.
Now, with Richard Bates, Paul Bates, Trevor Lloyd and Paul Clifford all returning after a year away, Silk is prepared to go for the title, starting at home to Marlborough on Saturday.
"If we had played throughout the season like we did in the second half, we would have won the league," he said.
"The good thing is we now know the teams we are playing against this year so we know how they bat and bowl and are not going into games with a blinkered view.
"The aim is promotion."
Zimbabwean international all-rounder Ryan Higgings has also joined the club as their overseas player along with Lee Ward and former Calne bowler Ross Dixie and Silk believes Higgings could prove vital.
"He has got Brian Lara out in an international before and he is a nice person to have in the armoury," he said.
"What we have got now is that combination of youth and maturity so hopefully, we will win more than we lose."
But, despite his confidence Silk believes the Glos/Wilts Division is going to be very competitive.
"It is going to be an extremely strong league," he said.
"It seems a lot of teams are going all out to take that one promotion spot.
"Swindon are going to be strong, Gloucester City Winget are always a good side and Marlborough have got new faces."
