Chippenham U13 edged out in opening clash
Wiltshire Youth Cricket League: Marshfield U13 welcomed Chippenham to Broadleys on Sunday for their opening league game of the season.
Weather conditions were variable with the game commencing in sunshine, followed by showers and a distinct drop in temperature. Thankfully, the forecast of constant heavy rain proved to be inaccurate and we managed to complete the seventy overs, even if the finish was slightly later than ideal.
Marshfield won the toss and chose to bat on the newly laid synthetic wicket. This surface looks like it is a batsman's dream with true, consistent bounce and Marshfield took full advantage with a superb knock of 177* from Kallan George, ably assisted by 65 from Matt Linehan. Marshfield finished on 310 for 3. Chippenham faced a mammoth task but bravely batted their 35 overs finishing on 157 for 2. Notable contributions for Chippenham with the bat included 73 from Alex Graham and 41* from Michael Hunter.
Both teams deserve credit for a most enjoyable game in what were testing conditions.
The result was a winning draw for Marshfield who picked up 13 league points while Chippenham earned 8 points for a losing draw.
