Wiltshire off to a winning start
Cricket: Wiltshire started their competitive season with a 42 run victory over Cornwall at Devizes on Sunday in a group match in the MCCA Knock Out Trophy.
Put into bat, Wiltshire batted steadily and after losing openers Jayden Levitt and Liam Dawson while reaching 33, a third wicket partnership of 47 between Olly Smith (29) and Michael Coles (52) saw them on their way.
A score of over 180 was always going to be challenging and Wiltshire were indebted to Alex Senneck who hit 28 off 23 balls at the end of the innings to take their score to 187 all out in 49.1 overs. For Cornwall, Kelvin Snell took 4 for 61 and Matt George 2 for 11.
In reply Cornwall lost early wickets to Alex Senneck and Richard Bedbrook and subsided to 42 for 5. Senneck took 4 for 28 off his 10 overs and Bedbrook finished with 1 for 41.
At 75 for 6 the matched looked over but a partnership of 51 between Chris Hunkin (38) and Rob Harrison (13) gave Cornwall hope, but with 4 wickets falling for 19 runs Cornwall were all out for 145 in 42 overs.
Liam Dawson took 2 for 13 off 7 overs and there was 1 wicket each for James Hibberd, Rob Travers and Pat Turk.
Next Sunday (May 4th) Wiltshire travel to Exmouth to play Devon in their next group match in the competition. With Liam Dawson unavailable, Roger Sillence and Damian Shirazi, who both missed the Cornwall match, come into the side as does Eddie Abel who has been playing for Oxford University Centre of Excellence this season.
