World Cup heartbreak for cricket ace Dawson
Cricket: Liam Dawson knows he and the England U19 failed their big test as they were dumped out of the U19 World Cup.
The young Lions were taught a lesson by India, going down by seven wickets on Sunday, after suffering an alarming collapse to lose their last nine wickets for 73 runs.
And former Chippenham and Wiltshire all-rounder Dawson, from Hazel Grove in Calne, is frustrated their cup dream is over.
"We are all extremely disappointed that we have been knocked out and we just didn't perform when it mattered," he said. "It's only really beginning to sink in.
"We weren't good enough on the day and were beaten by the better team who have a massive chance of winning the World Cup."
But Dawson, who was due to face Sri Lanka in the Plate Semi Final yesterday, doesn't believe he and his teammates could have done any more.
"We had a few game plans which didn't quite come off on the day but that's cricket and we all have to learn from it to make us better players," he said.
"All the lads gave 100 per cent every time which is all you can do as a player but on the day we just didn't play well enough."
The team are due to return this weekend with Dawson, who celebrates his 18th birthday on Saturday, set for pre-season training with Hampshire next month.
