Dawson determined to win the World Cup
 |
| FOCUSED: Liam Dawson |
Cricket: Liam Dawson says he does not want to look back on the U19 World Cup with regret and is focused on winning the trophy for his country.
The 17-year-old all rounder, of Hazel Grove, Calne, leaves with the England squad for a training camp in Sri Lanka next week before the tournament in Malaysia next month.
They will face Ireland, Bangladesh and Bermuda in the group stages and Dawson, who will celebrate his 18th birthday on March 1st, the day of the final, says the team must be positive.
"Winning the World Cup is the main goal and I want to perform to the best of my ability," he said.
"I don't want to come back and look back thinking what I could have done better to win the cup for England.
"If that happens I will be very disappointed."
The team are ranked fourth, behind Pakistan, India and Australia but Dawson believes they have every chance of claiming the title.
He said: "Pakistan are world champions and beat us 3-1 in the summer but we competed well against them.
"We've got nine players who have played first class cricket, so there is a lot of experience in the side.
"We're going to Sri Lanka to get used to the heat but the Asian teams are going to be strong."
But Dawson, who has just returned from a three month spell in Australia with Perth side Melville, still can't believe he will be contesting a World Cup.
He said: "It still sounds strange saying you are off to try and win a World Cup for your country. It is a big tournament and I know I will be a bit nervous."
After returning in March he will then have two weeks off before starting his pre-season preparations with Hampshire in Barbados.
"It's not all sorted yet but it'll be nice to go out there," said the former John Bentley School pupil. "It seems like I haven't stopped and I was quite tired coming to the end of my time in Australia because I've played six summers in England and Australia back to back.
"Returning to England in the winter is not nice.
It's freezing cold and I'm having to wear three jumpers."
