WILTSHIRE boss Neil Shardlow praised his side as they started their season by claiming the Marlborough Cup with a six-wicket defeat of Berkshire.

The home side skittled their opponents out for 139 at Trowbridge before teenager Jack Mynott and Tom Bowler saw out the run chase with 20 overs remaining.

Shardlow said: “We built on a lot of the positives from last year – it all came good on the day and the lads thoroughly deserved it.

“We bowled better and fielded better. Berkshire had changed their side a bit, but there were still some experienced players in there like Shaun Udal (ex-England spinner) so it was by no means a weak side.’’

Wiltshire won the toss and Tahir Afridi (3-25) and Owen Alsop (4-38) soon had Berkshire in trouble, Mukesh Bhatt and Paul Robbins bagging a wicket each as Richard Morris top scored with 48.

The home side lost Toby Davies in the first over but Jayden Levitt (29), Henry Langford (31) and Joe Breet (28) laid the platform before Mynott (21*) and Bowler (15*) saw them home.

Wiltshire play Corsham in their final warm-up match on Sunday (11am), with Shropshire visiting Trowbridge the following week in the first MCCA KO Trophy clash.
