WORK on Calne Cricket Club’s new ground at the Beversbrook sports ground has been completed.
The state-of-the-art cricket square and outfield was made possible by a grant of over £28,000 from the England and Wales Cricket Board .
“I think they saw the potential in our new ground,” said club chairman Martin Butler.
“It will benefit Calne overall and people are raving about it. It’ll be like playing town cricket in an isolated village setting and it won’t be used for anything but cricket.”
The Beversbrook complex has facilities that meet ECB regulations and the ground has been fitted with an advanced clay drainage system, the same as that used by Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.
Calne are also set to receive a further £36,000 from the ECB to provide high-specification batting nets.
The three-bay practice areas will have 36-metre synthetic run-ups and will be built in February.
In addition to its adult side, Calne has almost 100 young cricketers and hope to move over from the Calne Recreation Ground to play at Beversbrook in time for next season.
“Where we were wasn’t ideal for cricket but it has been a great facility,” said Butler, who has previously played as wicket keeper for Calne’s first team.
“We’re hailed as one of the best cricket clubs around and we want to attract a better standard of cricket.
“It’s the only way we’re going to move forward, particularly for the young players we have.
“Just playing in their own safe environment is going to make them feel better about themselves.
“They’ll just be able to get on with their sport.”
