LIAM Dawson had the honour of taking the match-winning wicket for England as they opened up a 1-0 lead in the Test series against South Africa.

The all-rounder from Calne was making his home Test debut at Lord’s last week and while he had a match to forget with the bat - he faced four balls over two innings and did not score a run - Dawson’s bowling in the second innings against the Proteas helped England wrap up victory with a day to spare.

The Hampshire player, bowling in tandem with man-of-the-match Moeen Ali (6-53), opened his account in the second innings with the all-important wicket of Hashim Amla – trapping the South African danger man leg before for just 11.

Dawson, who also took 2-67 in the first innings, then sealed the 211-run victory for Joe Root’s side when he removed last-man Morne Morkel.

The 27-year-old retained his place in the squad for the second Test in Nottingham, which was due to get underway tomorrow.

Dawson, who plays for Goatacre when his commitments allow him to, had his parents and club captain Ed Wilkins in attendance at the Home of Cricket on Sunday to see his match-winning efforts.

Wilkins said: “It was brilliant to see Liam do that at Lord’s. He doesn’t get to play for us much these days but we are very happy for him.

“I know he didn’t have the best of times with the bat, but he bowled well.

“Also, he has played for England in a Test at Lord’s – it doesn’t get much better than that.”
