LIAM Dawson his looking to grab his chance with both hands as he heads out to India for England’s one-day series.

The last year on a whole was a good one for the 26-year-old, who made his international debuts across all three formats in 2016.

But the Hampshire all-rounder from Calne won’t rest on his laurels as he admits he needs to grasp his opportunities at international level when he can.

“You’d like to play and you’d like to get a run in the side and the England team at the minute, especially the one day team is a very hard team to get into,” Dawson told the Gazette & Herald.

“If I do get the opportunity to play then I have to take that chance, it is as simple as that.

“When you are playing international sport, no matter how many chances you get you really have to take it.”

Reflecting on his past 12 months, the Goatacre man cannot believe how well his career curve has progressed, but is refusing to look too far ahead with an Ashes series in Australia looming next winter.

“It’s been a special year, at Hampshire we had a tough season there but being named players’ player of the year was a nice moment,” added Dawson. “To make my three (international) debuts in one-day cricket, Twenty20 and Test cricket is extremely special and is something I never thought I would have done if you asked me that a year ago.

“I wasn’t surprised about one-day cricket. Over the last couple of years I have performed well for Hampshire.

“It’s an amazing experience to be involved.

“I don’t think you can look too far ahead into what is going to happen. The year has been special but in sport you can still be brought down to earth.

“You can soon be out of form and you can soon be out of a team so I have to start working hard again for the one-day series in India (which starts on January 15).

“I haven’t even thought about that (the Ashes).

“I have a massive one-day series in India in January and potentially the Caribbean for a one-day series as well.

“I just need to keep performing and that is all I can do.

“The Ashes are a long long way away and we have a hell of a lot of cricket to play before then.”
