WILTSHIRE’S Women get their 2016 County Championship season underway on Sunday in Shropshire.

With the Women’s Cricket Super League looming on the horizon, the Wiltshire players will be using this season to prove themselves to the WCSL host teams.

Selection has produced a new younger look to the side including three Wiltshire Youth players of the season.

Cricketer of the Year, Potterne’s Rosie Pembroke, will make her first XI debut, while Corsham’s Melissa Story and Trowbridge’s Katherine Mills are selected again.

Mills has been a regular first teamer, while Story makes her 50-over debut having played in the T20 side back in 2014.

The county will have its youngest ever first XI captain in Calne’s Lucy Wood, who has skippered the county at every level from U13s to U17s.

Head of Women and girls cricket Ali Goddard said: “Lucy has shown good leadership skills throughout her county cricketing career. She has a good knowledge of the game and has the respect of the players.

“The 2016 season will be an exciting opportunity for the players. The Women’s Cricket Super League starts at the end of July. It should be every female cricketers aim and ambition to be selected to play at that level. The first step on that journey begins here in the County Championship.”

“Rosie, Melissa and Katherine have all produced performances at the younger age group levels. These games will create a huge challenge for them and the other players.’’
