CALNE’S Liam Dawson aims to remain grounded despite coming just an over away from being part of a T20 World Cup-winning England squad.

On April 3, Eoin Morgan’s side fell just short in the final of the ICC World Twenty20 as they were blown away by the big hitting of West Indies’ Carlos Brathwaite.

Dawson failed to make it out into the field after his shock call-up to the squad to travel to India but absorbed the experience of being on the game’s biggest stage.

He was left to look on as Brathwaite’s four sixes in the final over snatched victory from England but believes his team should be proud of their achievements.

“It was a great experience to be there and something you dream of as a kid,” he said.

“I would have loved to have played but it was an amazing month to be involved with English cricket and experience a World Cup.

“It was a very different feeling when you are not playing to when you are playing but it was disappointing for the whole squad to get that close to winning.

“However, we made it to a World Cup final when I don’t think many people gave us a chance and from where we were at the start of the game in the final, and to get that close to winning it, shows how far English cricket has come, especially in one-day cricket.

“I am in the selectors’ minds now but sport can change quickly and I have to keep improving and putting performances in at county cricket.”

Dawson has returned to action with Hampshire this week and after a mixed campaign last year, is aiming to learn the lessons of the last month to ensure that his selection was not a one-off.

“That has all gone now and I have got a massive season with Hampshire now, and I want to do well,” he added.

“The skill level at international level is a lot different to domestic cricket and that is probably the main thing I learnt. I need to make sure, when I go back to playing domestic cricket, that my skill levels are up to speed if I am to play international cricket.

“I just want to be consistent when I bat, bowl and field, and as long as I am doing that to the best of my ability and helping my team out, then that is all I can do.

“I’m not anybody different because I have been with England. I’ll just keep being who I am and doing what I do and that is all you can do from a cricket and personal point of view.”
