POTTERNE chairman Fred Kerley is predicting one hell of a title party when his side celebrate sealing a historic second promotion in three years at the Grove this Saturday.

Last weekend, Neil Clark’s villagers ensured that a memorable campaign would end with promotion to the top tier of the West of England Premier League as they thrashed Cheltenham by 205 runs to seal the Premier Two crown, completing a sensational rise up the divisions just two summers after their Glos/Wilts Division title win.

The celebratory bubbly was in full flow at Victoria Ground but club stalwart Kerley, who is also Potterne’s team manager, says that the real festivities will take place when his team host local rivals Goatacre in the final game of the season on Saturday.

“We celebrated winning at Cheltenham but you can’t celebrate too much because you have to be mindful that you’re at another ground,” said Kerley.

“But we’ve won the league with a game to go and this weekend, we’ll be back at home.

“We’re playing Goatacre, who had a great win against Taunton last weekend to pretty much see off their relegation worries and almost got to Lord’s, so it should be a great game and a great celebration.

“If you look at some of the scores from this season, you might think that the other teams have been weak but that’s not been the case – it’s been because we’ve played really, really well and have had an excellent season.”

Potterne have never competed in the Premier One division before.

A proud Kerley added: “Our plan has always been to try and get to Premier One and to do it; we’re absolutely over the moon.

“Last year, we almost got there, and that was beyond our expectations.

“This season has been amazing and to get promoted again is a fantastic achievement.”
