DEFENDING champions Wiltshire wrapped up their first victory in this season's Unicorns Championship Western Division as their bowlers secured a 142-run triumph over Dorset in Bournemouth this afternoon.

Mike Coles' men took the last of the 10 home wickets they needed shortly after tea at Dean Park to earn a flying start to the defence of the trophy they won last summer.

Dorset, for a time, looked likely to frustrate the visitors' hopes of victory with a series of partnerships at the top of the order.

But led by spinner Joe King, who took 5-79, and Ed Young, who took 3-51, Wiltshire eventually broke their hosts' resistance.

The visitors had closed day two in a commanding position after bowling their hosts out well short of their own first innings of 357, then declaring their second innings to leave Dorset an unlikely 403 to win.

Dorset started the day on 20 without loss but, realistically, needed to bat out the day to deny Wiltshire the spoils.

Opener Michael Porter was dismissed with the score on 27 but the top order stood firm as Wiltshire set about trying to knock over the wickets they required.

Opener Massor Khan (41) shared a partnership of 48 with Ryan Scott (46) before Scott and Luke Webb (16) put on 40 for the third wicket.

Webb's departure - the second victim of King - brough Jake Lintott to the crease and he and Scott added 75 before Lintott went for 58, stumped by Michael Bates off Coles with the score on 206, to allow Wiltshire to get at the lower order.

King and Young set about mopping up the tail and two more wickets went down before tea.

After it, Dorset lasted under five more overs as they were dismissed for 261, as Young removed home skipper Chris Park for 18, caught by Neil Clark to sealvictory.

Wiltshire's next Championship match is at home to Berkshire at Corsham CC, starting on Sunday, June 21.
