ED Wilkins is hoping Goatacre are on track to keep their rich history in the National Village Cup going after they reached the regional final last Sunday.

The 1988 and 1990 champions, and 2012 semi-finalists, reached the Dorset and Wiltshire group final last season only to lose to Dorset Cricket League outfit Parley.

But the Goats will have an instant chance for revenge when they host the same opponents in this year’s final on June 14.

Wilkins’ side hammered Shrewton by 228 runs last weekend, with the captain’s brother Jif smacking a towering 167 runs from 125 balls whilst Jack Haines (101) cracked his first century.

Goatacre posted a fearsome 350-8 before Rob Murphy and Christopher Watchman (both 3-31) helped skittle the hosts for 122 in 27 overs.

“It’s always a competition we want to do well in and we always target the Dorset and Wilts final as a minimum,” said Wilkins.

“We lost it last year but it’s great that we’ll have the chance to get some revenge this time – I think it will be a different game at our place.

“I got out early but Jif and Jack Haines had a great partnership of about 270 or 280.

“Jack is probably our best player but that was his first first-team 100. He always seems to get out on 50.”

There were contrasting fortunes for Goatacre in the Premier Two division on Saturday as they suffered a seven-wicket defeat at Shapwick & Polden.

Wilkins’ men were put in to bat first and Ed Kilbee hit an unbeaten 102 whilst Dan Horton made it to 37 not out as they posted 243-5.

But Shapwick’s Steven Tinnion was also in form with the bat as he smacked a towering 127 whilst Ben Ackland (37) and Tom Lace (35) helped the home side to 246-3 in little more than 35 overs.

Elsewhere, Potterne have been leapfrogged at the top of the table by Taunton following a 48-run loss in Somerset.

Tom Abell (131), Marcus Harris (84) and Bradley Lynch (49) all found their range as the hosts posted a mighty 345-5, with Jake Roberts claiming three wickets.

Luke De Souza led the Potterne run chase with 82 whilst Young (45) and Sahan Wijerathne (41) also contributed, but Shapwick’s Graham Fitt took four wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 297 in the 47th over.
