CORSHAM captain Ashur Morrison has just about caught his breath after his side were propelled to the top of the Premier One table after an epic clash with Taunton Deane.

Morrison’s men won by 59 runs in a contest where a whopping 867 runs were scored, including a storming 221 from Corsham’s South African overseas signing Dwain Fielding as he made only his second appearance for the club.

“It was amazing when we were batting and an absolute nightmare when we were fielding,” said Morrison.

“Dwain’s innings was one of the best innings I’ve ever seen and that allowed Colesey (Michael Coles) and myself to play our natural games. It was great but it wasn’t a record because Tom Hankins scored 293 and that was also against Taunton Deane (in 2010) “I was thinking about declaring when we got to 350-odd and I’m glad that I didn’t because we would have lost the game.

“When they got in, they were scoring 10 or 15 an over and we were finding it really difficult but luckily, we managed to get them out with just under four overs left.

“We’re a point ahead of Taunton St Andrews now and it’s great to be at the top of the table but it’s a long old season and we’re only five games in.

“We’ve just got to keep concentrating on every game as it comes because we’ve still got a long way to go.”

Saturday’s breathtaking game in Somerset began with Corsham batting first after winning the toss and after Steve Bullen fell for two, fellow opener Fielding let loose and cracked a fearsome 28 fours and nine sixes as he constructed his show-stopping innings from just 128 deliveries.

Josh Reed weighed in with 64 whilst skipper Morrison and Coles then threw off the shackles, smacking 77 off 34 balls and 73 from 29 respectively as the visitors posted a towering 463-3.

But Corsham were made to sweat as Deane hit back, opener Robert Woodman hitting 125 whilst John Rogers (59), Harry Thomas (57) and Russell Jones (52) all found their range.

But Joe King stemmed the tide with three wickets whilst Morrison and Tom Foley took two each to finally dismiss Deane for 404 midway through the 46th over.
