BURBAGE & Easton Royal skipper Tom Wallbridge hopes his side carry on not knowing when they’ve been beaten.

Title-chasing Burbage were pushed all the way by bottom-of-the-table Nationwide House last weekend but held their nerve to eke out a nine-wicket victory in Swindon.

Wallbridge’s second-placed side are just a point ahead of local rivals Marlborough, with the two teams meeting at the Red Lion Field this Saturday, but the Burbage skipper insists his side are placing no extra importance on this weekend’s derby.

“Nationwide should have beaten us – they know their strengths and weaknesses and were a pretty good side,” said Wallbridge.

“We managed to scrape through in the end though and show a lot of character.

“If I’m honest, we haven’t been playing to our full potential recently but we just don’t seem to give up and that’s a great trait to have.

“You could look at the game against Marlborough as a big game but we’re really just taking every match as it comes.

“They’re a good side and only a point behind but anyone can beat anyone in this division – it’s a really good league this year.”

Burbage were put in to bat first after winning the toss and posted 220-8, with David Cope (47), Haydn Amor (43) and Daniel Wootton (35) among the runs, with Nationwide’s Joe Perkins taking 4-37.

Nick Clarke spearheaded the hosts’ run chase with a knock of 79 but Burbage’s top run-scorer Michael Papps starred with the ball as he ended the afternoon with figures of 4-33.

Nationwide’s Luke Bradley-Leach added 44 but the home side were skittled for 211 with the final ball of the game.

Elsewhere, Marlborough made it three wins in a row with a commanding 123-run victory over Trowbridge.

Marlborough made 190-7 off their 50 overs thanks to useful knocks from opener Ben Head (31), Mike Bush (28) and George Fox (37 not out).

Fox then continued his fine form with the ball as he took 4-27 off his 10 overs, with Head also getting in on the act as he claimed 4-13 to dismiss Trowbridge for just 67 in the 26th over.

Marlborough Captain Tom Norris said: “Head and Fox gave us impetus at the beginning and end of the innings while Tom Jacques set the tone in the field with a great catch.

“Fox found the perfect length and it was vintage (Guy) Clarkson behind the stumps.”

Marshfield remain top of the pile after a six-wicket win at Calne.

Home captain Dan Knight hit 42 but the table-toppers’ Jeremy Bond (5-33) and James Williams (4-49) were in fine form with the ball, with Calne dismissed for 210 in the penultimate over.

Marshfield lost their first four wickets for 78 runs but Bond (76 not out) and Colin Sinkins (61 not out) guided the visitors to victory.

Tom Grant’s unbeaten century wasn’t enough to prevent Devizes going down by a single wicket at the hands of Great Bedwyn.

Grant smacked 124 as the home side posted 252-7 but Bedwyn’s Rob Palmer, who also tooked 3-39 hit 61 in reply.

The visitors’ run chase was bolstered by Neil Maycock (44) and Ashley Perry (42) and they reached 255-9 in the final innings to claim a narrow win.
