POTTERNE captain Neil Clark says that he can hardly wait for his side’s promotion showdown with Lechlade this weekend.

Clark’s side, who beat their Cotswold-based rivals on the opening day of the Glos/Wilts Division season, host league leaders Lechlade at the Grove on Saturday, with the winners clinching a place in the Premier Two division.

Potterne have never played in the second tier of the West of England Premier League and young skipper Clark says that promotion glory would provide a fairytale ending to his first campaign as captain.

“When the fixtures came out and we saw the players that Lechlade had brought in, a few people at the club wondered if it would end up being a title-decider – that’s exactly how it’s ended up,” said the Potterne skipper.

“It’s our biggest and most nail-biting game for years but I can’t wait for it. There should be a big crowd and these are the kind of games that you want to play in.

“We’ve got a young side and I’m young myself, so getting promoted would make it a perfect season.”

Tom Cullen and Sahan Wijerathne both hit impressive centuries as Potterne won at Painswick last weekend.

Cullen (116) and Wijerathne (113) put together an imperious partnership as the visitors declared on 263-1 in the 45th over.

Painswick’s James Cook was also in scintillating form but his 110 wasn’t enough to save the hosts, with Wijerathne and Clark taking three wickets apiece as the home side could only reach 228-9.

Biddestone’s Dwaine Perry took three wickets but couldn’t prevent his side suffering a 20-run defeat at Chipping Sodbury.

The hosts posted 176-8 but Biddestone skipper Neil Bredenkamp’s 55 wasn’t enough to prevent his side being skittled for 156 after 47 overs.

Chippenham suffered a single-wicket defeat at Rockhampton.

Michael Torr made 55 for Lee Ward’s men, who were skittled for 140 after 36 overs, before Denson Narayan’s three wickets couldn’t prevent the hosts reaching 143-9 in the penultimate over.
